Alumni from the first and other earlier graduating classes of Alain Leroy Locke High School have collaborated to establish a foundation to “keep alive the legacy” and “strengthen” alumni support for the Locke Saints. The school, named after the American writer, educator and Rhodes Scholar and established following the 1965 civil unrest in Watts, opened its doors in September, 1967. The first alumni classes graduated in the winter and summer of 1969. Locke High graduated its last class under the direct public education management of Los Angeles Unified School District in 2010, as the district board turned over control of the site to charter school operator Green Dot Public Charter Schools, in fall 2007, effective July, 2008 (with its first graduating class in 2011). A Locke alumni network was established in 2009 by classmates from the school’s early years in order to further the inter-communications among the classes and fund development efforts.
The Alain Leroy Locke High Alumni Foundation is a nonprofit 501(c)3 tax exempt public benefit organization with purposes for Saints inclusive of charitable services, arts, amateur sports, and advancement of education, science and technology. “While we are getting the word out about this endeavor we are also reminding alumni groups of the school’s 45th anniversary,” said Rudy Barbee (’72). Alice Manuel (’80) stated, “The school’s name, mascot and logo represented “three A’s” – academics, arts and athletics – and the “normal” high standard of excellence expected at the school.” The two explained the challenges of the school and successes later realized by students upon graduation in business, education, athletics, entertainment and service, and further stated these successes were a result of the guidance learned in class, school clubs, athletic teams, cheerleading and pep squads, as well as the Locke High School Marching Band and Drill Team. Students know their school as the “Home of the Successful Saints.”
